The church of St. Agatha on Kristberg is the oldest church still standing in Montafon.
It was built around the beginning of the 15th century and owes its existence to
mining.
Miners built the church, and people say that right around the spot on which it stands,
a tunnel or passage existed, and that one day, while men were working in the mine, the
opening caved in and everyone outside strongly doubted the chances of the trapped
mens rescue.
And, as it always is when people are in great danger, they began to pray and make
promises.
In the meantime, the trapped miners had made the promise to build a chapel or a church
if they should ever be rescued.
The people outside, who had seen what had happened, began rescue efforts
immediately.
They succeeded and the miners kept their
promise.
Today we look back on their keeping their promise as one of their finest deeds and so
we honour their memory.
