Silbertal, the Welsh town in Montafon
Silbertal takes its name from the mining of ore, which was started back in 900 B.C.
by the Romansh people. Many Welsh people came into the valley because of the rich silver
deposits, as there was a lot of money to be made there. Silver mining went on until the 18th
century.
Today, Silbertal has a population of 900 people. Next to a great many farmers, there is
also quite a lot of tourism due to the location (holiday area of Montafon!).
Silbertal is a unique combination for holidays, relaxation and pure nature.
Silbertal not only boasts a beautiful countryside, but also the oldest miners' church
in Montafon, the
St. Agatha chapel.
It was built in the 15th century by miners. Legend has it that trapped
miners promised to build a chapel in honour of St. Agatha if they were rescued.
