The Silbertal Mining Museum

The first known mention of ore-mining in Montafon is in the Churrhaetic Imperial
Cadastral Register of 842. In the first document about silver mining in 1520, Emperor Karl
V enacted mining regulations for Montafon. Many town and landmark names stem from these
days, in which the Rhaeto-Romanic influence was still strong.
The Mining Museum on the second floor of the town
hall shows the history of
mining in Montafon, which was an important industry in the valley for a few hundred years.
Documents, drawings and a few exhibits, some of them on loan from the Tyrolean Foundry
Museum in Brixlegg, show how iron, copper and silver were mined, transported and worked.
You also get to see the hard life of the miners, the function of the "Gewerken"
and that of the mountain judge. One can see different types of ore and other geological
specimens from the region. In one room, the acquisition of "white gold",
electricity from water power, is presented by the Vorarlberg Illwerke, which also required
intensive "mining" in order to build the reservoirs and line tunnels.
